2017 In Summary

New Staff Appointments

Jake Chaplin is continuing his part time studies at Northumbria University and is enjoying the challenge of balancing full-time work and part time study.  We fully support Jake’s commitment and assist him wherever we can, whether this is technical support or giving him a study break!

Alex Martin returned to kyoob in the summer of 2017 after completing a placement year here in 2015 and a summer placement in 2016.  Alex was awarded the best MEng student, by CIBSE North East, for his final year studies.  He has settled back into working life and he’s even managed to get his old desk back!

CIBSE North East Chairman

Philip Oliver is now into the second year of his tenure as CIBSE North East Regional Chairman.  He has been busy, assisted by the regional committee, promoting the institution with local academic establishments including Northumbria University, Gateshead College, Hartlepool College as well as supporting other education events in the region.  Philip has been working closely with CIBSE head office to develop the delivery of technical seminars in the region to streamline the registration and certification process.

CDDFRS Stanhope Fire Station

Working with our longest standing client is always a pleasure!  The latest station to be updated is located in Stanhope, County Durham.  The project includes thermal upgrades to the building fabric and a small extension to the rear to house the new gym and office areas.  The building services are being replaced throughout and include new boiler plant, ventilation systems, electrical re-wire, data installation and vehicle turn out system.

Holy Family School, Darlington

As part of our ongoing framework agreement with Carmel Education Trust, we have completed the refurbishment and extension of Holy Family primary school in Darlington.  The project consisted of a full electrical re-wire, new data installation together with new hybrid ventilation units to teaching spaces.  The project was completed to a tight programme over the summer holiday period which required close collaboration between both design and construction teams.

Nurse Teaching Centre, Sunderland University

Kyoob have undertaken several projects with Sunderland University following on from successfully joining their framework. The most recent project was conversion of several floors of Shackleton House to form a new state-of-the-art Nurse Teaching Facility. This is a major growth course for the University and although the facility has only been open since September, we are currently working on plans to convert the remaining area of the building with more teaching facilities, this time focussing on mental health nursing.

Backworth Park Primary School and Northumberland Park Phase 3

As part of our ongoing involvement in the Northumberland Park development with Northumberland Estates we are currently on site with the construction of Backworth Park Primary School and the extension to the Northumberland Park retail area.  The school will provide education facilities for the newly completed adjacent housing estates and includes hybrid ventilation systems and a large photovoltaic array.  The retail park will initially bolster the existing area with a new supermarket and drive through restaurant, additional retail outlets will follow in subsequent phases.

Nexus Metro Stations

2017 saw our continued appointment to refurbish West Monkseaton, Monkseaton and Cullercoats stations following the successful refurbishment of Gateshead Stadium and Felling stations to the clients exacting standards.

Ford Store, Shirley and Nissan Store, Darlington

Working for Vertu Motors we have recently completed the new Ford Store in Shirley and Nissan Store in Darlington.  The Ford Store is a new build project constructed to the rear of the existing unit.  The store is heated and cooled via a central variable refrigerant volume (VRV) and local ventilation system which both incorporate heat recovery technology.  All lighting is low energy LED and is controlled via daylight and presence detectors.  The Nissan store is a refurbishment and extension to an existing unit and incorporates a VRV and ventilation system similar to the Shirley Store.

52 Old Elvet, Durham

The conversion of the old gentlemen’s club into 12 modern, luxury apartments has been on site since late 2017 and is due to complete later in 2018.  The building services systems have been designed to integrate seamlessly with the listed character of the building whilst still providing practical and comfortable living spaces.

Schooner Court, Hartlepool

Within the 42-bedroom apartment building, operated by Bernicia, boiler plant was replaced with new modern condensing boilers together with a new automatic control system.  Each apartment was also fitted with new local control to enable much simpler and easier temperature control for the occupants.  The plant replacement was undertaken during the start of the winter period and therefore temporary boiler plant was required to ensure no loss of heating to the occupants.  Close contact with the contractor was required to ensure the changeover was seamless.

Fish Tank, Newton Aycliffe

We have worked closely with the client and project manager to develop tender designs for the provision of a new learner pool facility in Newton Aycliffe.  The building consists of a swimming pool aimed at babies and toddlers to assist in developing water confidence and learning to swim from an early age.  There is also a café area, multi-function room together with changing facilities.  The building will be on-site early in 2018 with completion later in the year.

Ford Store, Middlesbrough

A new large extension is being provided to the existing Ford Store in Middlesbrough.  Given the age of the facility, the client has requested that all existing systems are upgraded to serve existing and new areas.  This includes the replacement of central ventilation plant, boilers, hot water generation and automatic controls.  All “front of house” lighting is being replaced with new LED fittings and controls.

St George’s Church, Jesmond

Kyoob were appointed directly by a charitable trust to design, tender and contract administrate the installation of external floodlighting to this grade 1 listed church building. This appointment further strengthens our significant experience in the ecclesiastic sector. The completion of the installation was celebrated by some 800 visitors attending a church service and firework display.
