2013 - A Brief Review
Then there were 5 (and a bit)
2013 has been a busy year and we felt it was the right time to make some new staff appointments. Jack Atkinson joined us in June as a trainee electrical engineer and Michael Williams joined later in October. David Creed also completed a three month summer placement from Northumbria University. 2014 is already looking promising and we are looking to expand further, please get in touch if you’re interested in joining us.
BIM BIM BIM
Philip has been working with BIM CAMPUS in Newcastle,
offering expert M&E design guidance to budding BIM candidates. You can read all about it here
Multi National Head Quarters,
Manchester
Philip was asked to review the overarching design philosophy adopted for the new global headquarters for this large multi-national organisation. His review focussed on the novel energy strategy, which included ground coupled ventilation and heat recovery systems together with pure plant oil combined heat and power systems and how these technologies had been simulated in dynamic thermal modelling software.
Turbine Factory, Lake
District
We are currently working with a turbine manufacturer based in the Lake District on the refurbishment and extension of their R&D facility. The existing building dates back to the early 1800’s so there’s plenty of scope to reduce heating bills through careful design of the new insulation system. Low energy design is very important to the client in his product design and this has been carried forward into the building design. The new ventilation system utilises passive stack ventilation, incorporating solar powered fans for those really warm summer days. We have worked closely with the architect to develop the façade design to ensure sufficient air flow is provided.
Kennedy Gardens,
Billingham
The refurbishment of these three former council tower blocks is well under way and due for completion later in 2014. The communal areas, foyer and community facilities are all being updated to modern standards. The ageing district heating network is also being replaced with a new below ground pipe-in-pipe system from the remote energy centre to each tower block.
Earl Grey House,
Newcastle
For those who haven’t noticed our sign board on probably the best street in Newcastle! The ground floor of Earl Grey House is currently being refurbished into a new, swanky bar and restaurant due to open March 2014. kyoob have provided M&E designs for back and front of house areas, together with input into the specialist lighting design.
St Aidan’s Church, Bamburgh
Ed has recently completed specialist lighting designs to St Aidans’ shrine and the chancel in Bamburgh. The new shrine was designed by Donald Buttress OBE, currently Surveyor Emeritus at Westminster Abbey. The work was completed on a tight budget using local suppliers and contractors which enabled fine tuning and “tweaking” to be undertaken quickly.
CDDFRS Bowburn Workshops
The new workshop on the outskirts of Durham will enable efficient ongoing maintenance of the fire services fleet of vehicles. The state of the art facilities include a paint spray booth, engine exhaust systems, compressed air systems and oil systems. The building is due for completion in early 2014.
